BACK
TO THE WHEELS
The explosion of acid jazz in the early 90s rekindled
Gomez’s enthusiasm about d.j.ing, and he was
soon spinning several nights a week in small Jersey
City clubs. “Labels like Acid Jazz, Ubiquity,
and Instinct were releasing records that got me excited
about music again,” says Gomez. “Sure,
there were producer-created one-offs that were aimed
squarely at the clubs, but they featured great performances
by really talented musicians! And then there were
album artists such as Corduroy, JTQ, The New Jersey
Kings, Outside, and Greyboy who created melodic, vibrant,
chops-heavy music that blew me away. I was determined
to figure out a way to help promote and support this
sound, as well as create my version of it.”
BACK
TO THE LAB
Gomez returned to the studio and spent the next several
years creating jazzy, funky compositions for soundtracks,
including a number of titles that were used by MTV
(“Real World”, “Extreme Challenge”,
“Making The Video”) PBS (“In The
Mix”), and in independent film (“Never
Again”). Gomez also collaborated on a variety
of mix projects for independent jazz-funk label Undersound
Recordings.
Wheels
of steel-wise, Gomez found that the Internet offered
an excellent opportunity for him to showcase his jazz
mixing vision. He created a series of one-hour mixes
that were featured on the Web’s premier jazz-funk
radio sites, including Mixmeister’s mmRadio.com,
the funk and soul site mrsoulsatisfaction.com, and
the Netherlands-based jazz-funk site royalgroove.com.
