GETTIN’ SIRIUS
By 2002, Gomez had honed what he felt was a perfect formula for a jazz mix show, combining 70s soul jazz, soundtrack jazz, and instrumental funk; 80s jazz-funk; 90s acid jazz; and today’s electrojazz, house jazz, and uptempo smooth jazz. He pitched his idea to Teresa Kincaid, smooth jazz program director at the newly launched Sirius Satellite Radio. Kincaid loved the idea and soon debuted “In The Mix”, the first jazz mix show on satellite radio, on Sirius’ Planet Jazz channel.

“Teresa was a bold, creative, and visionary programmer for embracing my concept,” explains Gomez. “She believed that funky jazz music would work in a mix show format and she was absolutely right. What amazed me, though, was the feedback that I received from listeners. The show not only attracted smooth jazz fans who enjoyed the music’s energy, it also pulled in hip hop aficionados who were hearing jazz and funk tracks that had been sampled in their favorite rap hits as well as younger listeners who were discovering a new genre of dance music.”

ENTER THE BOUTIQUE
The buzz created by Gomez’s show on Sirius attracted the ears of commercial radio executives, who felt that the idea of a jazz mix show would be ideal for smooth jazz radio. Gomez coined the show’s name, The Groove Boutique™, which is currently syndicated by United Stations Radio Networks to smooth jazz stations in America’s premier radio markets.
